In honour of the Not-for-profit sector recognition week

As you know, the Ontario government recently passed the “Not-for-Profit Sector Recognition Act” that declared the third week of February as a time to honour the not-for-profit sector and the valuable work that not-for-profit agencies perform in the fabric of Ontario society.  I hope you have found the events and messages of thanks so far this week motivating and encouraging signs of your importance to so many people.  As we have come to the close of this week, I want to provide some commentary from my perspective of the importance of all of you connected with Broadview Village and our broader publics.

Broadview Village, and The Salvation Army as a whole, have been so effective and impactful because of you…

  • ❧ The wonderful staff who work tirelessly day by day to enrich the lives of the people they support and, in turn, have their lives enriched
  • ❧ The people we support who honour us by allowing us to impact their lives and who, in turn, impact ours
  • ❧ The volunteers that provide advice and counsel, such as the community council members, by providing direction, support and “second thought” to many aspects of our business
  • ❧ The donors who provide much needed funds for the valuable services being offered
  • ❧ The families of the people we support, who offer their ongoing support, love and dedication to their loved ones and the programs they participate in
  • ❧ The government bodies that provide not just money, but expertise, support and advise – particularly during the ever-changing landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • ❧ The many partner agencies in the community that make us better, and whom we make better, by working together for the greater good.
  •

People are at the heart of everything we do and everything we accomplish.

Please accept my thanks for everything you do, and take some time to thank those around you, for everything we are able to accomplish together.

After all, it all comes down to the people who are at the heart of the Village!

God Bless you all.

Dear Broadview Village Family,

I can’t express enough to all of you how much our family appreciates and recognizes the important and beautiful work you do.  Your selflessness in working with people in our community brings tears to my eyes when I think of what you give to help make the lives of the ones we love so much that much better.

I smile every time D’Arcy goes to “work” in the morning knowing she is in caring, loving hands for the day  – looked after by a team of professionals who entered this sector because they knew it was the right thing to do.

God bless you, everyday, for the sacrifices you make to continue doing this job and for the love and care you give to my child.  We are all better for people like you.

I wish I could shout it from the rooftops and mountains….but for now, it is on the dashboard of my car and the front window of my house so people can see how proud my family is to know people like you!!!

Please stay safe and secure in the knowledge that families like mine will forever be grateful to you and your family for what you provide and do.  You are simply the best.

“We all need to appreciate the hard-working professionals in the nonprofit sector, especially during the pandemic period when its services are so much needed and volunteers and donations have dropped. The Nonprofit Sector Appreciation Week will help ignite the passion and the performance of workers who are understandably exhausted and feeling burned out. We need to celebrate these Invisible Champions in our communities. Their sense of dedication, powered by their personal vision and mission has supported them through many challenges, but our appreciation and support for them will go a long way.”
Daisy Wai
MPP for Richmond Hill

Bill 9, which was championed by MPP Wai through a Private Members Bill, will see the Nonprofit Sector Week of Appreciation take place the third week of February in perpetuity. The first Appreciation Week will take place from February 14-20, 2022.

The week is intended to recognize the exceptional individuals in the nonprofit sector whose work transforms the lives of individuals, families, and communities, as they work alongside communities.

Preamble

Ontario’s non-profit sector is a major contributor to innovation, job creation and the economy. Its one million professionals, driven by their mission, are experts in delivering social, economic and environmental solutions, especially at the local community level. They enrich our quality of life by promoting mental and physical health, social equity, education, the arts, sports and recreation, the environment, child development, senior care and much more. They serve millions of Ontarians every year in every corner of the province.

Their work is indispensable and heroic, but it is all too often invisible. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the remarkable contributions of the essential services provided by the non-profit sector, which relies on funding and volunteers. Their public service deserves to be recognized and honoured.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario,
enacts as follows:

Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week

1 The third week in February each year is proclaimed as Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week.

Red Dress Day

Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is observed on May 5th. The day honours and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada. Red Dress Day was inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project installation, in which she hung empty, red dresses to represent the missing and murdered women. Red dresses have become symbolic of the crisis as a result of her installation.
